According to reports, Kylian Mbappe has officially notified PSG that he will not exercise the option to extend his contract for an additional year, resulting in his contract expiring in 2024.
This presents a dilemma for the club, as they must decide whether to sell him this summer or risk losing him as a free agent next summer.
Mbappe’s current agreement is valid until the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, and PSG is unwilling to allow the 24-year-old to depart without a fee. Consequently, there is a possibility that he may be transferred during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Last month, it was confirmed that the contract Mbappe signed last summer was initially structured as a two-year deal, with an optional third year. The decision to exercise this extra year lies with Mbappe himself.
At present, the French international is on the verge of entering the final year of his contract. This mirrors the situation he faced last year, when PSG successfully persuaded him to extend his contract.

If, as expected, Mbappe chooses not to activate the additional year, he will be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with a club outside of France in January. It then means he would leave for free without PSG getting a single penny in transfer fees.
The recurring saga of Mbappe’s potential move to Real Madrid appears to have commenced once again. What is said to have particularly distressed PSG was that the letter informing them of Mbappe’s decision was leaked to the media before it reached the club itself.
From Paris Saint-Germain’s perspective, if Mbappe does not extend his contract for another year, it would imply that his current deal would expire next summer, leaving him free to depart without a transfer fee.
PSG is determined to prevent such a scenario from unfolding and is unwilling to let Mbappe leave on a free transfer next year.
