Chelsea announce Mauricio Pochettino as new manager

Mauricio Pochettino has been officially appointed by Chelsea as their new manager. The 51-year-old Argentine has signed a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the option for a third season.

This marks his return to management after being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain last summer. Pochettino emerged as a leading candidate for the position after talks with Julian Nagelsmann fell through.

Initially, there were concerns about his emotional ties to Spurs after guiding them for years, but positive discussions alleviated those reservations.

Although there were rumors linking Pochettino to a return to Tottenham following Antonio Conte’s departure, no official approach was made by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

Consequently, Pochettino has now become Chelsea’s third permanent manager, and the fifth overall when including interim appointments, during the Todd Boehly-Clearklake Capital era.

Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, expressed their confidence in Pochettino, emphasizing his experience, excellence, leadership qualities, and character.

They believe his winning mentality, extensive experience in various leagues and languages, and dedication to player development make him an exceptional candidate.

Chelsea had a disappointing first season under their new owners, finishing in mid-table despite significant spending on transfers amounting to around £600 million.

Pochettino aims to address this by bolstering the squad with a striker and goalkeeper, while also trimming down the bloated roster during the summer.

The club’s owners released a statement expressing their satisfaction with the thorough and thoughtful process carried out by the sporting team.

They expressed delight in Pochettino’s appointment, highlighting his world-class coaching abilities and impressive track record.

“The sporting team conducted a diligent and thoughtful process that the Board is proud of,” said the owners.

“We are delighted that Mauricio will be joining Chelsea. Mauricio is a world-class coach with an outstanding track record. We are all looking forward to having him on board.”

Additionally, Jesus Perez, Miguel d’Agostino, Toni Jimenez, and Sebastiano Pochettino have joined as part of the backroom staff.
