PSV Eindhoven announced that Ruud Van Nistelrooy has stepped down as the manager of the club ahead of their final game of the season.
The former striker, who had successful stints with Manchester United and Real Madrid, served as the manager at the Philips Stadion for just one year. Despite the short tenure, Van Nistelrooy secured victory in the Dutch Cup earlier this month.
PSV will secure a second-place finish in the Eredivisie if they manage to earn a single point in their upcoming match against AZ Alkmaar on Sunday.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the club explained that Van Nistelrooy, aged 46, cited insufficient support as the reason for his departure. The decision followed several discussions about “internal affairs.”

“While the club had hoped for Van Nistelrooy to complete the season, he has chosen to leave immediately,” the club statement read. “Fred Rutten will assume the managerial role for the trip to Alkmaar.
“Van Nistelrooy reported this morning that in his opinion there was not enough support within the club to continue longer. He immediately explained this to the players and staff.
“PSV regrets Van Nistelrooy’s decision and is grateful to him for winning the Johan Cruyff Shield and the KNVB Cup this season and hopes to close the football year with second place.”
