Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah expressed his disappointment with the club’s disappointing season following Manchester United’s qualification for the Champions League.
After Newcastle secured their place in the top four on Monday night, Liverpool relied on United losing both of their remaining games to have a chance of catching them on the final day.
However, it was not to be as Erik ten Hag’s men shipped four past Chelsea at Old Trafford to secure the final Champions League spot.
Salah expressed his disappointment on social media, stating there was no excuse for not finishing in the Premier League’s top four.
“I am utterly devastated,” he tweeted.
“There is simply no justification for this. We had all the resources necessary to secure a spot in next year’s Champions League, but we fell short.
“As Liverpool, qualifying for the competition is the minimum expectation. I apologize, but it is too early for positive or optimistic posts. We have disappointed you and ourselves.”
Despite the post, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is confident that Salah will not seek an exit from the club in search of Champions League football.

The Egyptian had signed a lucrative contract extension last year and there is a possibility that he could enter the final year of his deal by the time Liverpool potentially regain their Champions League status.
However, Klopp dismissed concerns about Salah’s future, stating that he did not interpret the player’s comments as indicating a desire to leave. Klopp also highlighted that if he accepted such a mentality, he would be seeking an exit himself.
“Obviously Mo loves being here and Mo was part of it. He said apologies for what ‘we’ did – not apologies for ‘what the other guys did, but I had to go with them’. It is all fine.
“If ever a player would come to me and said, ‘oh, we didn’t qualify for the Champions League, I have to leave’, I would drive him to the other club myself.
“I would take the key, [and say] ‘come in the car, where do you want to go, I drive you’.
“That would be something I never could understand. It is, I would say, ‘oh, we didn’t qualify for the Champions League, I need to work in the Champions League so I go’.”
While Liverpool’s failure to qualify for the Champions League is expected to have financial consequences, potentially costing the club £50 million, there may also be implications in terms of attracting top players, as the UEFA Europa League is generally considered less appealing.
