Erik ten Hag has emphasized that Manchester United will avoid repeating the same mistakes made by Todd Boehly’s recent regime at Chelsea, should a takeover occur at Old Trafford.
By securing a draw against Chelsea on Thursday night, United can secure their spot in the Champions League. Meanwhile, despite spending approximately £600 million under co-owner Boehly in the post-Roman Abramovich era, Chelsea are set to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League this season.
Boehly broke the British transfer record by acquiring Enzo Fernández from Benfica in January, but the team still lacks a starting frontline striker, and Mykhailo Mudryk, signed for £88.5 million, has not been starting games.
While the Glazers consider bids from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim, United could potentially have new owners. However, Ten Hag believes that the club’s structures are in place to sustain the progress made this season, as they are on the brink of securing a top-four finish.
When asked if Chelsea’s decline in the Premier League standings following Boehly’s takeover served as a warning for United regarding their anticipated change of ownership, Ten Hag responded, “When there is no strategy or the right strategy, money doesn’t work.”
He emphasized that a concentration of talented players, top managers, and financial resources in the UK creates intense competition, but success requires the right utilization of funds through smart spending and a well-defined strategy.
“You have to do the right things, you can have money but you have to spend it in a smart way and you need to have a strategy behind it, otherwise the money doesn’t work.”

Ten Hag experienced successes in the previous summer’s transfer window with impactful signings like Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. The club aims to maintain continuity despite the uncertainty surrounding the ownership change because they recognize the need for stability going into the next season.
Regarding David De Gea’s contract situation, Ten Hag’s final approval is pending before the Spanish goalkeeper commits his future to the club. De Gea has agreed on the framework of a new contract that would extend his stay at Manchester United for at least two more seasons, albeit with reduced terms.
United chose not to trigger a one-year option on his current deal. Throughout the season, Ten Hag has consistently shown support for De Gea, highlighting his achievement of winning the Premier League’s Golden Glove award for most clean sheets.
De Gea’s future is among several crucial decisions to be made. Ten Hag stresses the importance of making sound recruitment choices to cope with the increased competition for European places, with a striker and a central midfielder being the top priorities.
Mason Mount from Chelsea is strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford, but Arsenal and Liverpool are also monitoring his situation.
Ten Hag acknowledged the strength of numerous teams in the Premier League beyond the traditional “top six” clubs, citing Aston Villa, Brighton, and Brentford as examples.
He recognizes that the league’s balance may shift during the summer transfer window, emphasizing the desire for players with the right personalities who excel and contribute at the highest level.
