After 11 years at the Camp Nou, Jordi Alba, has announced his intended departure from Barcelona this summer.
Barcelona confirmed the news on Wednesday, revealing that the 34-year-old will be leaving at the end of the season.
“It’s a decision I have thought a lot about. When I said that I wanted to stay, it was the truth,” Alba said. “Being honest with myself and with the club, I think the best thing to do is to step aside.
“I’ve always tried to help the club. This is the best for all parties. My relationship with everyone is exceptional. I’m going with a good feeling, I’ve given everything. It hasn’t been all rosy, but I’m leaving with my head held high.”
The left back also revealed that he did not have an agreement with any other club over a potential transfer, stating that his initial thought was to remain at the club.
“As of today I have nothing done with any club and I have not spoken to any club, because I initially wanted to stay. But the years go by and this year I have had a different role, which wasn’t less important. I just think that I have to give way to the youngsters.”
Taking to social media, Messi, who played alongside Alba for nine years before his own departure in 2021, expressed his well wishes for the Spanish international and his future endeavors.
“You were more than a team-mate, a true accomplice on the pitch… And how nice it is to also be able to enjoy how well we get along personally,” Messi wrote in an Instagram post.
“You know that I always wish you the best and also your family, I hope your new stage continues to bring you much success and joy. Thanks for everything, Jordi. A big hug!”
Alba, who joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2012, enjoyed a successful career at the club, winning six La Liga titles, five Copa del Rey trophies, and one Champions League and Club World Cup each.
