Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland lit up their fan bases and the football world on Saturday with their impressive goalscoring feats. It seems whenever those two play records tumble. Meanwhile, it was more heartbreak for Chelsea and Inter Milan fans in their respective leagues.
It’s another edition of Pundit Daily Digest and it promises to be as entertaining as ever. Let’s take a look at the trendiest football news from around the world.
1. Same old Chelsea as Brighton pull off comeback win at Stamford Bridge
The Blues continued their poor form as they fell to Brighton despite scoring first, a goal which was coincidentally their first goal in five matches. Connor Gallagher scored from a Mykhailo Mudryk assist early in the first half but their visitors hammered home an equaliser just before half time.
Things went from bad to worse as the Seagulls went ahead in the second half through a thunderous strike from Julio Enciso. Interim manager Frank Lampard couldn’t get his side to muster up a comeback and was condemned to his third defeat in the three games since taking charge of the club.
2. Inter couldn’t “Monza” up a win
The Nerazzurri could not follow up their European triumph over Benfica with a domestic one as they were shocked 1-0 by the visiting Monza on Saturday night. Inter who are fifth on the log have had to endure a horrid run of form which have seen them winless in their last five league fixtures.
Having finished as runners up last season, the quest for a Champions League spot is proving difficult for Inter this season going by their domestic form. However, with 30 games played and only two points adrift of fourth place, Simone Inzaghi will be hopeful his side can somehow secure a spot in Europe’s most prestigious competition.
3. Haaland equals Salah’s Premier League record
Haaland made history in Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Leicester by equaling Mohamed Salah’s record of 32 goals in a 38-game season. What is even more impressive is that the Norwegian has done so with eight games left of the campaign.
Haaland scored a first half brace for his side but was quickly hooked off during the interval before he could score more. He is proving to be the bargain signing of the summer after scoring 47 goals in 40 games so far.
It was a routine win for Pep Guardiola’s men who have mustered up 10 consecutive wins in all competitions as they continue to put the pressure on Arsenal in the title race. The Cityzens have reduced the gap to just three points between them and the Gunners and will keep hoping Mikel Arteta’s side slip up.
4. Mbappe becomes PSG’s Ligue 1 highest goalscorer
The France captain scored in PSG’s 3-1 win over Lens to become the club’s all-time top goalscorer in Ligue 1 with 139 goals. Mbappe’s first half strike put him ahead of Edinson Cavani who mustered 138 league goals for club.
With the goal, Mbappe also became the outright highest goal scorer in Ligue 1 this season with 20 goals, ahead of Alexandre Lacazette and Jonathan David who both have 19 goals so far.
5. Ciro Immobile involved in car crash
According to several reports in Italy, Lazio forward Ciro Immobile was in a car accident involving a tram near the Stadio Olimpico. Immobile is said to have hurt his arm and one other person has been taken to hospital.
Immobile told people at the scene that the tram “went through a red light” and then made contact with his vehicle. He said, as seen in videos posted on social media: “The tram went through a red light. Luckily I’m fine, my arm just hurts a little.”
