Brighton hire Roberto de Zerbi as new manager

Brighton have announced the appointment of Roberto de Zerbi as their new manager replacing Graham Potter, who left for Chelsea.

The Italian has signed a four-year contract and will immediately get to work with managing the squad having the opportunity to familiarise himself with some players during the international break.

Brighton are currently fourth in the Premier League and have been looking for a new manager since Graham Potter left for Chelsea earlier this month.

Former Brighton captain Andrew Crofts was named interim first-team manager with current player Adam Lallana part of the coaching staff.

However, the cancellation of Brighton’s two games since Potter’s departure meant they were unable to take charge of the side in the Premier League.

De Zerbi’s most recent club was Shakhtar Donetsk, whom he left in July due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He had previously spent three years in charge of Serie A side Sassuolo before leaving for Shakhtar.

He earned rave reviews for his style of football at Sassuolo, leading them to two eighth-place finishes in Serie A, and he also won last year’s Ukrainian Super Cup with Shakhtar.

Brighton Chairman Tony Bloom said: “I am absolutely thrilled Roberto has agreed to become our new head coach. Roberto’s teams play an exciting and courageous brand of football and I am confident his style and tactical approach will suit our existing squad superbly.”

The new manager will start his reign with a trip to Liverpool on Saturday October 1, before welcoming Tottenham to the Amex in his first home game a week later on Saturday October 8.
