Real Madrid defeat Eintracht to lift the Super Cup

Champions League winners Real Madrid defeated the Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt to win the 2022 UEFA Super Cup in Helsinki on Wednesday night.

Goals by David Alaba and Karim Benzema in either half of the tie were enough to see off their Bundesliga opponents who quite frankly struggled for large periods of the match.

Alaba opened the scoring for Los Blancos in the first half with a close range finish after a header back from Casemiro. Benzema added the gloss to the tie with a well struck half volley from a Vinicius Jr cross sealing yet another trophy for Los Blancos.

The Super Cup is Real Madrid’s fourth trophy of 2022 after winning the La Liga title, the Champions League and the Spanish Super Cup.

New summer acquisitions Aurelien Tchouameni and Antonio Rudiger both made their competitive debuts for Real Madrid on the night.

With the win, Real Madrid have now equalled the record for most UEFA Super Cup wins with five. The other two teams to have lifted the trophy as many times are AC Milan and Barcelona.

The Frenchman once again reminded the world why he is so heavily backed as a frontrunner for this year’s ballon d’Or award.

The match also saw manager Carlo Ancelotti become the first manager to win the UEFA Super Cup four times, breaking the tie with Pep Guardiola who won it twice with Barca and once with Bayern.

Real Madrid kick off their season on a high but all attention will now be focused on defending their La Liga title as their campaign starts with a visit to newly promoted Almeria.
