Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara is set to be on the sidelines for a while after suffering a hamstring injury in the Reds’ opening Premier League game of the season against Fulham.
The Spaniard lasted only 51 minutes on Sunday before having to be forced off due to the injury. Initial assessment of the injury confirmed the player had a strained hamstring and more scans will have to be carried out to determine the extent of damage.
Injury issues seem to be a recurring theme for Thiago since his move to Liverpool having missed large periods of last season as well. The former Bayern Munich star played in only 39 of Liverpool’s 63 fixtures across all competitions last season.
Although a return date is unknown, the midfielder could miss the rest of August, ultimately missing games against Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Bournemouth and Newcastle.
The 31-year-old’s injury comes at a bad time for Liverpool who already have quite a few players out already. Jurgen Klopp is missing the services of Ibrahima Konate, Diogo Jota, Caoimhin Kelleher, Kostas Tsimikas, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain due to injury or illness but has refused to dwell on the situation.
