Lionel Messi has stated that he believes Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema should be awarded the ballon d’Or for this year after a “spectacular year”.
Benzema is no doubt one of the frontrunners for the award this year after scoring 44 goals in 46 games in all competitions this season.
The 34-year-old also capped off an individually brilliant campaign with the La Liga and Champions League titles.
It is the consistency and success over the course of the season which has led many onlookers to suggest the Real Madrid forward deserves football’s most coveted individual prize.
Previous ballon d’Or holder Messi has also given his take on who should be crowned next and concurring with many that Benzema deserves the award.
“I think there are no doubts this year,” Messi told Argentine TV station TyC Sports.

“It is very clear that Benzema had a spectacular year and ended up victorious in the Champions League, being essential from the last 16 onwards in all the games.”
The seven-time ballon d’Or winner also addressed controversial remarks by Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski who felt he should have won the award ahead of the PSG man.
“Obviously he can express himself and say what he wants. I honestly don’t share what he said but I didn’t give it much importance either. That’s it, it stayed there and he can say what he wants and I’m not interested.
“But the words I said at that moment were from the heart and because I really felt that way. I said he deserved the Ballon d’Or before, because the year before I thought he was the best, but the year I won it he was not the best. I just said that.”
