Jurgen Klopp was ecstatic as his Liverpool side won the FA Cup, their second trophy of the season, in similar fashion to the first, via a penalty shootout against Chelsea.
Liverpool completed a clean sweep of domestic cups winning the FA Cup having earlier won the Carabao Cup as well.
Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta missed his spot-kick for the Blues but Sadio Mane couldn’t win it for his side as his own penalty was saved by his countryman Edouard Mendy.
The decisive penalty later went to Kostas Tsimikas after Mason Mount’s spot-kick was saved by Alisson Becker. The Greek defender made no mistake from the spot, sending Mendy the wrong way to win it for his side.
With the loss, Chelsea have now lost three consecutive FA Cup finals, setting an unwanted record of being the first team to do so.
Speaking after his side’s win over Thomas Tuchel’s side, Klopp admitted he felt sorry for Chelsea as the match was down to fine margins.
“Outstanding, it was an incredible, intense game against Chelsea – they would have deserved it exactly the same way, like in the Carabao Cup,” Klopp said. “That’s how small the margins are.
