The shirt worn by Argentina legend Diego Maradona in which he scored the famous “hand of god” goal has sold at auction for a world record price of over £7million.
Maradona wore the bright blue strip in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England where he scored two of the most famous goals in football history.
The first goal is called the “hand of god” because in the match, Maradona got ahead of goalkeeper Peter Shilton and, as the two jumped, Maradona hit the ball into England’s empty net with his palm.
In the second, Maradona darted from the halfway line, evaded the England defense before slotting home. It was voted Goal of the Century by FIFA.
After the match, Maradona swapped shirts with England midfielder Steve Hodge, who continued to own it while loaning it to Manchester’s National Football Museum for two decades.
Several decades later, Hodge decided to auction the shirt off. Auction house Sotheby’s put an estimated £4-6 million price on the item and within hours, the first bid had come in at the £4 million mark.

Now, the hand of god shirt has set a world record price at auction for a match-worn Jersey after being auctioned out for £7,142,500.
“I have been the proud owner of this item for over 35 years, since Diego and I swapped shirts in the tunnel after the famed match,” Hodge said upon putting the strip up for sale.
“It was an absolute privilege to have played against one of the greatest and most magnificent football players of all time. It has also been a pleasure to share it with the public over the last 20 years at the National Football Museum, where it has been on display.
“The Hand of God shirt has deep cultural meaning to the football world, the people of Argentina, and the people of England, and I’m certain that the new owner will have immense pride in owning the world’s most iconic football shirt.”
