As the World watched Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema put up another impressive display in the Champions League, his former teammate Mesut Ozil has tipped him for the ballon d’Or.
The Frenchman scored two goals in the 4-3 loss to Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final taking his tally to 14 goals in the competition and 41 goals in all competitions.
He may have ended up on the losing side but his brace means Los Blancos still have a fighting chance when both sides meet at the Bernabeu for the second leg.
Benzema has continued to impress, going from strength to strength and scoring goals for his team.
Of his 14 goals of the Champions League campaign, the 34-year-old has scored two hat-tricks, one against PSG and another against Chelsea, both of which were in knockout stages and vital to Real Madrid’s progression in the competition.
He is now only three goals short of Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 17 goals in a Champions League campaign.
His performance impressed a lot of people, one of who was Fenerbahce midfielder Ozil. Ozil played alongside Benzema at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013.

Benzema has now scored 40+ goals in a season for the first time in his career.
He has the most goals in La Liga with 25 league goals so far this season and is on course to win the title with Real Madrid.
While Benzema appears to be leading the race for the ballon d’Or, other aspirants like Mohamed Salah, Robert Lewandowski, Sadio Mane and Kylian Mbappe are still very much in the race.
