PSG Clinch Ligue 1 Title Despite Draw

PSG secured a 10th French Ligue 1 title on Saturday night despite being held to a 1-1 draw against 10-man Lens at the Parc des Princes.

Lionel Messi’s fourth league goal of the season was cancelled out by a Corentin Jean strike despite the visitors being with 10 men.

PSG with 78 points were able to seal the title as they were 16 points ahead of second placed Olympique de Marseille. They have won eight out of the last 10 Ligue 1 titles and 10 overall.

With the title, PSG have now equalled the record set by St Etienne who won 10 Ligue 1 titles between 1957 and 1981.

Clinching the Ligue 1 title will no doubt come as a great source of pride for PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino as it becomes his first league title of his managerial career.

Pochettino took over midway through the 2020-21 season with PSG second in Ligue 1 and finished the campaign in the same position.

However, this season has been far more comfortable, with the club racing clear of their closest rivals early on and sitting atop the table since matchday three.

It is also a special record breaking title for midfielder Marco Verratti who has now managed eight Ligue 1 titles, more than any other player.

The title will serve as a respite for Pochettino’s men who were dramatically knocked out of the last 16 of the Champions League by Real Madrid and were also knocked out of the Coupe de France by Nice.
