The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected the appeal made by Russia to suspend their competition ban by FIFA amid the invasion of Ukraine.

The Russia national team as well as all Russian clubs were banned from participating in any FIFA activities because of the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Following the decision made by FIFA, the Russian football association made an appeal and also asked CAS for the suspension to be frozen pending the outcome of their appeal against the decision.

However, CAS have now ruled in favour of FIFA, upholding the ban which means Russia will be unable to feature in the World Cup or even play the playoffs towards qualification.

Russia were supposed to play Poland in the European playoffs but Poland have been awarded a bye and will progress to the next round without having to play the fixture.

A statement released by CAS on Friday read:

“The president of the appeals arbitration division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected the request filed by the Football Union of Russia (FUR) to stay, for the duration of the CAS proceedings, the execution of the FIFA Council’s decision to suspend all Russian teams and clubs from participation in its competitions until further notice (the challenged decision).

“Accordingly, the challenged decision remains in force and all Russian teams and clubs continue to be suspended from participation in FIFA competitions. The CAS arbitration proceedings continue.

“A Panel of arbitrators is currently being constituted and the parties are exchanging written submissions. No hearing has been fixed yet.”

Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic had sent a joint letter to FIFA stating that they will refuse to play against Russia while the invasion persists.
