Former Chelsea and Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud scored the winner for AC Milan in the crunch tie against Napoli on Sunday and coach Stefano Pioli has revealed the reason why he was brought to the San Siro in the first place.
The Frenchman scored the only goal of the game in the second half at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to open up a two-point lead over city rivals Inter Milan.
Giroud has been a revelation of a signing for AC Milan since making a €1m summer transfer from Chelsea.
The 35-year-old has scored eight goals and provided three assists in 19 Serie A appearances for the Rossoneri. He also scored a brace against Lazio en route to the Italian Cup semi-final.
AC Milan coach Pioli has revealed how pleased he was with signing Giroud and what led to the deal in the first place.
“We wanted to bring in players who have already won, who know what it means to work towards important targets and people who are great professionals,” Pioli told the media.

“It just took a video call last summer for us to all realise who we were dealing with.
“It remains a very young squad in general, so having someone with that kind of experience really helps.”
On speaking about AC Milan’s title chances, Pioli was quick to write his side off despite being top of the table.
“Inter are still the favourites because they are the reigning champions and have a game in hand,” he said.
“They are a very strong team who know what it means to win. The sooner we have a table with all the teams playing the same number of games, the sooner we’ll be able to judge.”
