The Cameroon Football Federation have confirmed the appointment of former Indomitable Lions captain Rigobert Song after parting ways with former coach Antonio Conceicao on Monday.
According to a statement released by the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) signed by Minister of Sports Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, the decision to hire Song was a directive from the president Paul Biya.
Conceicao guided the Indomitable Lions to a third place finish in the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations which took place on home soil.
The Portuguese had taken over the national team in 2019, succeeding Clarence Seedorf. Cameroon topped their group at the AFCON 2021 but lost on penalties to Egypt in the semi-finals. However, they defeated Burkina Faso via penalties to secure a third place finish.
“The Cameroonian Football Federation announces to the public opinion and the family of the sport, the end of the contract of coach Antonio Conceicao,” the statement from Fecafoot read.
“This is an opportunity to thank all his staff for the work done within our national selection. The upcoming deadline for our national team requires new orientations and a new breath. We wish all the best in the future.”
