Bayern Munich were far from their best as they left it late to secure a draw against Austria side, RB Salzburg in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.

It was the first time Salzburg were playing a knock out match in the UEFA Champions League and they did well to keep Bayern at bay, leading till the last minute before conceding a goal for the tie to end in a draw.

Last season’s Champions League saw both Bayern Munich and Salzburg in the same group but Salzburg were defeated by the German side 9-3 on aggregate.

However, it was a whole different story this time around as both sides had to settle for a draw after a first half goal by Salzburg forward Chukwubuike Adamu was cancelled out by a late goal by Bayern through Kingsley Coman in the second half.

Match Report

Bayern looked promising in the early minutes of the game after they almost got an opener from a Serge Gnabry shot but were denied by Philipp Kohn.

Moments later, Salzburg proved to be the better side in the first half of the game as they eventually got a goal.

Salzburg broke fast on the counter attack through highly rated forward Karim Adeyemi. The youngster’s cross was cushioned down by Brenden Aaronson for first half substitute Adamu, who slotted it past goalkeeper Ulreich.

The home side almost doubled their lead shortly after but Aaronson had his shot saved by the Bayern keeper.

Bayern had their chances too with Leroy Sane coming close but the German could only drag his effort wide.

In the second half, the Bavarians came in stronger and kept on searching for an equalizer.

Coman was a nuisance to the Salzburg defense, linking well with Sane but they were unable to cap the superb team play with a goal.

Salzburg were whiskers away from doubling their lead in the 81st minute after Sane lost control of the ball to Adeyemi. However, the Salzburg attacker volleyed his effort straight at the keeper.

The rebound fell to Adamu who was faced with an empty net but his effort was denied by Benjamin Pavard with a goal line clearance.

Bayern snatched an equaliser at the death courtesy of a fine link up play between Thomas Muller and Coman.

The Salzburg defense failed to react quickly to the threat of Muller who levelled a pass to Coman. The latter tapped in from close range to get a much needed equaliser for his side.

Escaping defeat means Bayern remain unbeaten in 22 away games in the Champions League.

Both sides will have a clean slate in the second leg at the Allianz Arena to see progresses through the round.
