Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo finally put an end to his goal drought in his side’s 2-0 win over the Seagulls on Tuesday night.

Goals by Ronaldo and Portuguese compatriot Bruno Fernandes ensured that the Red Devils went back to winning ways after a run of three games without a win in all competitions.

United found it difficult to stamp their authority on their visitors as they struggled in the final third.

However, United grabbed their first goal against the Seagulls through Ronaldo in the 51st minute.

The Portuguese dribbled past a number of defenders and rifled a shot from just outside the box and into the back of the net.

Just minutes later, Brighton’s woes were compounded after Lewis Dunk was shown a straight red card for a foul on Anthony Elanga.

However, despite their numerical disadvantage, the visitors had several chances to grab an equaliser late on but were let down by a lack of quality in the final third.

United grabbed a second deep into stoppage time after quick thinking from Paul Pogba in taking a set piece. The Frenchman laid the ball to Fernandes who carried it all the way from the United half, down the right wing and slotted it past Sanchez in goal.

The win boosts United’s top four hopes, sending them above West Ham and into fourth place.

Speaking after the match against the Seagulls, Ralf Rangnick explained how important it was for Ronaldo to be back on the score sheet.

“Very important not only that he scored but it was an outstanding goal. It was important for all of us, but his overall performance was one of the best since I arrived here,” Rangnick said.

“It should have been 3-0, 4-0 after 75 minutes but there is a bit of lack of assuredness in front of goal.

“[The win was] very important after three draws. This was highly important and another intense game coming up against Leeds, high speed football for 95 minutes and we need to recover and be in form for Elland Road on Sunday.”
