British TV broadcasters Gary Lineker and Piers Morgan were engaged in a war of words that stemmed from an argument about the footballing prowess of former Manchester United star David Beckham.
It appears Piers Morgan is not a fan of David Beckham who is considered one of the legends of the game by many.
The journalist aimed to discredit the career of Beckham but faced strong opposition by Lineker which led to an exchange of words between them.
Beckham, a former England international, won trophies throughout his career while playing for the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and LA Galaxy.
However, Piers seemed unfazed by the stats and trophies, insinuating that Beckham was not a good football player much to the chagrin of Lineker.
How did the exchange of words between Piers Morgan and Gary Lineker start?
It all started when Piers Morgan tweeted about Odell Beckham Jr who was playing at the Super Bowl with his side the Los Angeles Rams.
The wide receiver scored the first touchdown of the game and Piers Morgan tweeted: “Great to watch a Beckham who can actually play football…. #SuperBowl”
His post didn’t sit well with Lineker who responded by tweeting: “You might dislike him, for whatever reason, but David Beckham was a great footballer. One of our finest.”
Piers Morgan wasn’t convinced and instead doubled down on his initial claim, going on to say David Beckham was overrated.
“You might want to suck up to him, for whatever reason, but Beckham was the most overrated player in history. Wouldn’t have got onto the Arsenal Invincibles bench,” Piers tweeted.
In response, Gary Lineker went on to fetch the trophies David Beckham had accrued during his playing days.
He tweeted: “6 Premier Leagues, 2 FA Cups, 1 Champions League, 1 La Liga, 1 Ligue 1. Balón d’Or runner up. 115 caps for England, 59 as captain. One of the best crossers of the ball the game has ever seen. Yeah, overrated. 🤦🏻♂️”
However, Piers Morgan was far from impressed. He stated that the listed achievements were down to the quality of players within his squad.
His reply was: “Take away the crossing & free-kicks, he was a fame-hungry snail with dumb haircuts who only won that much because of the truly great players around him.”

Lineker who was an England international himself, once again came to the defence of his compatriot. This time, he used the analogy of Cristiano Ronaldo scoring goals
“Take away the crossing and free kicks? That’s the equivalent of saying about Ronaldo “Take away the goals”.”

Piers who is a well-known Ronaldo fan disagreed with the former Barcelona and Leicester forward. He stated that the Portuguese was the greatest player in history and a way better player than Beckham.
“Well no, because Ronaldo’s the greatest player in history and can do everything better than Beckham. But it would be like taking away your goal-hanging & tap-ins… you’d be lucky to make Leicester’s all-time XI without those…”
At this point, one could tell Piers was only goading Lineker. The former Leicester forward was incited enough to hit back with a derogatory tweet of his own, calling him “utterly useless”.
“Absolutely agree, without the tap-ins and goal-hanging, I wouldn’t have scored hundreds of goals and won golden boots, I’d be like you, completely and utterly useless.”
Having achieved his aim of successfully inciting Lineker, Piers only tweeted a few emojis in response: “🤣🤣🎣”
Piers Morgan has built a reputation over the years as being one of the most controversial broadcasters in England.
His snarky opinions are mostly tailored to evoke debate amongst readers and television audiences alike.
Seeing how much traction his back and forth with Lineker garnered, he later tweeted: “Just to clarify, my opinion of Beckham’s football prowess is nothing personal… I think Messi’s overrated too.”
Make of that what you will.
