Senegal Handed Huge Boost Against Malawi As Mendy Returns

Senegal have confirmed goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has recovered from Covid ahead of their final group stage match of the Africa Cup of Nations against Malawi on Tuesday.

The Chelsea shot-stopper had missed his country’s previous matches having contracted Covid-19 prior to the first game of the tournament.

The Senegal football federation revealed Mendy had resumed training after his recovery from Covid via their social media handle on Facebook in which they posted pictures of the goalkeeper.

Senegal wrote “Edou is back”,  as the caption for the pictures uploaded confirming that Mendy has left isolation and rejoined his teammates.

Mendy was not the only Senegal player who contracted the Covid virus though. Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly was also amongst several players like Famara Diedhiou, Saliou Ciss, Bamba Dieng, Mame Baba Thiam, Pape Matar Sarr, Nampalys Mendy who were sidelined. However, there has been no news about Koulibaly.

It is unclear whether Mendy would be fit enough to be selected by Senegal with the nation dropping no hint about his inclusion.

Mendy made his debut for his country in 2018 where Senegal grabbed a 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea. Since then, he has been integral for his side.

The Lions of Teranga will hope to do their best against Malawi in order to qualify to the knockout stages. Senegal are currently tied on four points with Guinea.

Malawi who have three points will be hoping to cause an upset to boost their own chances of qualifying.

Guinea will face bottom placed Zimbabwe on Tuesday hoping to qualify as well.
