AFCON 2021: Group A Qualified Teams

The final round of fixtures of the 2021 AFCON group stages are underway starting with Group A.

Group A comprises of AFCON hosts Cameroon, Cape Verde, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.

Cape Verde vs Cameroon

Cameroon went into their final group stage fixture having already qualified to the knockout stages. The hosts had won their two previous matches against Burkina Faso and Ethiopia accruing six points.

The Indomitable Lions were looking to make it three wins out of three when they faced Cape Verde but it was not to be as they ended up with a 1-1 draw.

A first half goal by tournament highest goal scorer Vincent Aboubakar was cancelled out by second half substitute Garry Rodrigues.

Ethiopia vs Burkina Faso

Meanwhile, in the other fixture, Burkina Faso battled Ethiopia who were yet to record a single point in the competition thus far.

Rather expectedly, Burkina Faso put themselves in front courtesy of Cyrille Bayala who lobbed his effort over the onrushing goalkeeper, ensuring a 1-0 advantage at half-time.

However, Ethiopia were gifted their way back into the match via a penalty after a VAR review.

Getaneh Kebede made no mistake from the spot, converting his country’s second goal of the tournament to restore parity between the sides.

Neither side could find the winner and the game ended 1-1 with the points shared.

Implications Of The Results On AFCON 2021 Group A

Cameroon’s draw with Cape Verde means they finish as group winners with seven points. Unfortunately for Cape Verde, they needed a win to qualify automatically but having secured a draw, they finish level on points with Burkina Faso on four points but placed third on the log.

Burkina Faso advance as Group A runners-up despite being level on points with Cape Verde because they have a superior head-to-head record (they beat them 1-0 in their previous encounter).

Cape Verde will have to wait on the best losers list which they currently top having ammased four points.

Ethiopia have been eliminated after finishing at the bottom of the table with a point.
