Arsenal have announced that they have made a formal request to the Premier League board to postpone their coming fixture against Spurs scheduled for Sunday.
The request was made due to the rising cases of injury, Covid and general unavailability of players due to suspension or participation in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The absences have left the London club with a rather thin squad especially in midfield where they have the majority of their players missing.
This has now led Arsenal to make a request to the Premier League board to postpone their fixture against Spurs.
“We can confirm we have made an application to the Premier League for the postponement of Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur,” Arsenal said in a statement.
“We have reluctantly taken this step but we have many players currently unavailable across our squad as a result of Covid, injuries and players away with their countries at Afcon.
“We will provide more information as soon as it’s available.”

Premier League clubs this season have been forced to request their matches be postponed due to covid-19 outbreaks within their squads. However, it is still unclear what exactly the criteria for postponement are.
Liverpool had their first leg Carabao Cup fixture against Arsenal initially postponed due to suspected Covid cases within the squad.
Teams like Tottenham, Manchester United and Leicester have also had their fixtures postponed at one point or the other this season and now Arsenal are the latest to request a postponement.
Some notable absentees in the Arsenal squad are Granit Xhaka who faces a three-game suspension for his red card against Liverpool, Nicholas Pepe, Mohamed Elneny, Thomas Partey who are all representing their countries at the Africa Cup of Nations, Martin Odegaard who is suffering from illness and Emile Smith-Rowe who is injured.
It remains to be seen whether their request is granted by the Premier League board or not.
