Chelsea are reportedly trying to negotiate a compensation to bring Emerson Palmieri back to the club this transfer window.
Emerson has been on loan to Ligue One side Lyon, having left on a season-long loan from Chelsea in the summer.
The Italian defender is having a good season in France which makes Lyon all the more reluctant to let him leave.
Blues boss Thomas Tuchel is reportedly keen on signing a left-back and Emerson is seen as the most reasonable choice.
However, recalling Emerson will not be easy as it could reportedly cost Chelsea in the region of £4million to cancel the defender’s contract with Lyon.
But despite the cost, the deal is said to be a more cost effective option for the club rather than signing someone else permanently.
The Blues have been in the hunt for a left-back ever since Ben Chilwell sustained an injury and was ruled out for the rest of the season with anterior cruciate ligament damage.
With Chelsea still competing on all fronts this season, squad depth is a high priority for Tuchel and one major department lacking is the left back position.
The Blues have been linked with a number of left-backs like Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico and AC Milan’s Theo Hernández.
However, those players are guaranteed to command huge transfer fees especially during the winter transfer window and it is particularly absurd to spend a huge amount of money on a short-term replacement.

Chelsea were also linked with Everton want-away defender Lucas Digne but all indications suggest the Frenchman is close to signing for Aston Villa.
This narrows the options for Chelsea to Emerson but according to reports, Lyon have already rebuffed two approaches from the club with their latest compensation offer having been worth £3.3m.
The French club are reportedly holding out for a better offer from Chelsea but reports also suggest they are already searching for a replacement for the Italian.
When asked in December about the potential recall of Emerson from Lyon in the January transfer window, Chelsea boss Tuchel said:
‘We are looking into it because we now have a new situation with Ben Chilwell so of course we look into whether we can do something and what we can do.
‘One of the possibilities and the players we know and that we love as a person is Emerson but we need to check. We are not into details. We are discussing and reflecting and this will go on for the coming days, maybe weeks.’
Emerson is a well-known figure in the dressing room at Stamford Bridge. The defender was a part of the Chelsea squad that won the Champions League last season.
He is also a proven Premier League defender who wouldn’t need time to adapt to the demands of English football which makes him an ideal choice if a resolution can be found between both clubs.
