Ethiopia were made to pay for conceding an early red card as they lost 1-0 to Cape Verde on AFCON 2021 opening night.
Julio Tavares was the lone goalscorer in a narrow 1-0 victory by Cape Verde over Ethiopia in the second game of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The game swiftly left Ethiopia’S hand as Yared Baye was shown a straight red card in the 12th minute for a rash foul.
The defender was initially cautioned with a yellow card but the card was overturned to a red after a review by the Video Assistant Referee.
Things could have been worse for Ethiopia as they almost fell behind after nearly conceding an own goal. It took the intervention of goalkeeper Teklemariam Shanko to prevent first half substitute Mignot Debebe’s poor clearance from finding the back of the net.

Just before the break, the Blue Sharks capitalised on their numerical advantage by taking the lead. Garry Rodrigues passed the ball to Julio Tavares who headed it into the back of the net.
Being a man up and a goal up, Cape Verde had several chances to put Ethiopia to the sword but were not clinical enough to convert their chances.
On the other hand, the Walias were visibly off their game and being a man down took its toll as they only managed one attempt on goal in the second half.
The loss sends Ethiopia to the bottom of Group A and also stretches their winless streak in the competition to 16 matches.
Ethiopia will have the daunting task of facing Cameroon in their next fixture on January 13 while Cape Verde will battle it out with Burkina Faso later that day.
