Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is finally stepping down from his role on February 1 with Richard Arnold to take over.

The club has chosen Richard Arnold to be the new chief executive officer as a replacement for Woodward who is stepping down from his role.

It is important to note that Richard Arnold takes the position of chief executive officer (CEO) and not the role that Woodward previously held which is executive vice-chairman, a role which is now defunct.

The change is not a surprising one as the club had announced as far back as April that the change was coming.

United had announced that Woodward was resigning but that he would still remain in his role until the end of 2021.

The Red Devils have been making a lot of backroom staff changes at the club of recent in a bid to restructure the club.

They hired a director of football, John Murtough, a technical director, Darren Fletcher, and most recently, an interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

The club announced Arnold’s appointment via their social media handle on Twitter:

“We are pleased to announce that Richard Arnold will become Chief Executive Officer of the club, effective from 1 February. #MUFC”

Woodward originally joined the club in 2005 after the takeover by the Glazer family. He started to take charge of several financial aspects of the club in 2007 before he was appointed to the board of directors and named executive vice-chairman in 2012.

Woodward would be remembered for making United a marketing powerhouse, however, but his tenure would ultimately be defined by the club’s steady decline on the pitch.

His replacement Richard Arnold joined United in 2007 and has been group managing director since 2013.

The 50-year-old has been in charge of overseeing all operational and commercial business at the club.
