“Trippier Did Not Join For The Money” – Newcastle Boss Eddie Howe

Newcastle have announced the signing of English right-back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid for £12m and add-ons.

The 31-year-old has agreed terms on a deal that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2023-24 season with the option of extending for a further year.

Trippier underwent a medical at the club on Wednesday ahead of the move. With his signing, Trippier becomes the first addition to the squad under Newcastle’s Saudi owners who took over the club last year.

It is a reunion for both manager and player, as Eddie Howe worked with Trippier while in charge of Burnley. The former signed the right-back from Manchester City in January 2012 and coached him for two seasons.

Trippier also has vast Premier League experience having played at Tottenham for four years before his move to Atletico Madrid.

“I really enjoyed my time in Madrid, but when I became aware of interest from Newcastle United and having worked with Eddie Howe before, I knew this was where I wanted to be,” Trippier said after signing the contract.

“I’m aware there is a lot of work ahead of us but I know the demands of Premier League well and I know what an amazing club this is with very talented players. I can’t wait to get started and I’m excited to step out at St James’ Park as a Newcastle player.”

Newcastle boss Howe was quick to point out that Trippier joining the club was not money motivated. He said the signing showed the club’s pull in the transfer market.

“It’s a sign that the club has a huge pull – and I’m not talking financial here,” said head coach Howe.

“Kieran hasn’t come for the financial benefits of the contract. He’s come for the club and for the challenge that the team faces at the current time, but also the longer-term vision, so I think that’s a massive thing for the football club.

“Hopefully with his signing, other players around the world will potentially look at that and share his dream and his vision for what he sees. That’s a big thing for us.”

Newcastle will hope Trippier provides the needed experience and quality in defence, a department they have fared poorly.

The Magpies set an unwanted record in 2021 as they shipped in 80 goals; the most ever recorded in a calendar year by a Premier League team.

Howe’s side have also allowed more shots on their goal than any other Premier League team this term. They are second-bottom in the table and two points from safety after 19 league matches this season.

Newcastle have only won one league game this season and would hope signing Trippier and potentially others as well will change the fortunes of the club.
