Aston Villa have announced the signing of Brazilian forward Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona on a loan deal.
The deal, which is subject to a medical and work permit, is a six-month loan deal with an option to buy.
Steven Gerrard was reportedly keen on the move being a fan of the player and having played alongside Coutinho at Liverpool for two-and-a-half years.
Speaking ahead of Monday’s FA Cup third-round tie at Manchester United, Gerrard revealed his admiration of the player.
“I don’t think you get a nickname as a magician if you’re not a special footballer, so he’s someone I have an incredible amount of respect for.
“He won two league titles and two Copa del Reys with Barcelona. I think if you go and have a look at his Wikipedia page I think you’ll see a serial winner wherever he’s been.
“I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about the player, he’s a friend of mine, so if I’m asked the questions I can speak for as long as you want.”

Coutinho has featured in 16 games for Barcelona in all competitions this season and is under contract at the Nou Camp until June 2023.
The forward has struggled to make an impact for Barca scoring 28 goals in 105 games since making his big-money move from Liverpool in January 2018.
Despite his little contribution for the La Liga side, he has won four major trophies at the club.
Coutinho spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Bayern where he won the Champions League, the Bundesliga, and the German Cup under Hansi Flick.
Barcelona were keen to get him off their wage bill as they continue to tackle their financial issues. Aston Villa will reportedly pay up to 65% of the player’s wages while he is on loan at the club.
The 29-year-old was reportedly keen to return to England and sign for an ambitious club where he’d have the chance to play regularly.
Coutinho is said to be relishing the idea of playing for Aston Villa under Gerrard. He would hope to rediscover his best form in the Premier League where he rose to stardom.
