Young Boys 2-1 Man United: “Defensive” Solskjaer to blame for shock defeat

Man United fell to a 2-1 defeat against Young Boys on Tuesday night with the Red Devils having to pay for being a man down for most of the game.

Summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo was once again on target, getting his team onto a brilliant start but his goal would later prove to be useless as the hosts ran away with more or less the lass kick of the game.

It was a defensive “disasterclass” by United who seemed to have fallen apart after right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off for a rash challenge on Christopher Martins 35 minutes into the game.

The dismissal led to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opting to make defensive changes to his side with Jadon Sancho sacrificed for Diogo Dalot in the first half in a bid to keep things sturdy at the back and protect their lead.

Indeed, Man United began the second half with five defenders with Raphael Varane replacing Donny van de Beek at the interval all in a bid to curtail the threat posed by Young Boys.

However, despite the defensive changes, Young Boys continued to press for an equaliser and Man United soon saw their lead erased in the 66th minute when Moumi Ngamaleu got the better of Varane and buried a fine strike from a Meschak Elia cross.

Perhaps with the intention of closing up shop and at least salvaging a point, Solskjaer withdrew both Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes from his set up, further stifling his side’s creative potential.

United were soon made to pay as Jordan Siebatcheu benefitted from a sloppy back pass from Jesse Lingard which he latched on to and put his effort beyond an advancing De Gea.

Having gone into the game as favourites, Man United would be kicking themselves that they had let their lead slip the way they did.

With the loss to Young Boys, Man United have lost their first match in a UEFA Champions League campaign for only the second time, also doing so in 2015-16 under Louis van Gaal, a 2-1 defeat to PSV.

Ole’s men find themselves at the bottom of Group F after Atalanta drew 2-2 against Villarreal in the other fixture.
