Arsenal could breathe a sigh of relief from their recent struggles as they thrashed West Brom 6-0 in the League Cup on Wednesday night.

The Gunners have had to endure a torrid start to the season losing their opening game against Brentford and also losing to Chelsea last weekend. They had also failed to score in either game.

However, Arsenal were given a bit of respite away to Championship side West Brom in Wednesday’s League Cup tie.

The Gunners scored six goals, three in each half as they bamboozled their opponents to progress to the third round of the League Cup.

A hattrick from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and goals from Bukayo Saka, Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette gave the North London club their first win of the season after three games.

Speaking after the game about his team’s win, Mikel Arteta stated that he was glad to be back on winning terms.

“When you lose a game, you have to win as quickly as possible. Today’s match is going to give us some confidence,” Arteta told the Arsenal website.

“The spirit has been really positive, to be fair. I’m really pleased to win tonight, to score six goals away from home, to get a clean sheet and to be in the next round.

“But I’m even more pleased about the preparation during the last two days and the togetherness and dedication the players are showing, how much they want to turn the situation around.

“I’m really happy for them and for the fans – that we can give them something to cheer.”

Arsenal were drawn against AFC Wimbledon for the third round of the League Cup. However, the Gunners’ immediate concern will be Manchester City which they face this weekend in the Premier League.

Speaking on the forthcoming tie against Manchester City, the Arsenal boss remained optimistic.

“Winning always helps but the motivation and the desire to go to Manchester and try to win the match is not going to change at all.

“It’s great to see the support that we got from the fans today. The players were talking about it – and [now it’s about] getting ready mentally and physically to go to Manchester and try to win.”

Arsenal currently sit 19th on the Premier League standings with only Norwich having a worse start to the campaign than them.

Arteta will hope his team can get their season running with a result against the champions at the Etihad on Saturday.
