Bayern Munich defeated Borrussia Dortmund 3-1 to be crowned winners of the 2021 German Super Cup on Tuesday night.
The 2021 German Super Cup final seemed to be a replay of the 2020 and 2019 finals, as Bayern and Dortmund met again for the third year running with each winning one of the last two finals.
Bayern won the German Super Cup in 2020 at their own stadium – Allianz Arena – while Dortmund won the 2019 Super Cup at their stadium- the Signal Iduna stadium.
Dortmund would have liked to reclaim the title as the final was once again played at their stadium, but this was not to be.
Polish forward, Robert Lewandowski was at his absolute best, scoring twice to condemn Dortmund to a consecutive German Super Cup final defeat to their fierce rivals.
Both teams wore black armbands out of respect for legendary Bayern striker Gerd Muller, who died Sunday aged 75. Bayern also wore shirts with Muller’s name and number 9 at the back.
Dortmund took the game to their rivals from the first whistle and nearly put themselves ahead when England midfielder Jude Bellingham created a beautiful through ball to Marco Reus on 20 minutes, but Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer saved with his foot.
Moments later, Moukoko thought he had put his side in front after a beautiful finish from Erling Haaland’s pass, only to be denied by the offside flag.
Following a series of well crafted chances from both sides, Lewandowski put Bayern ahead with a bullet header from Serge Gnabry’s cross four minutes before halftime.
Thomas Muller scored a tap in from what seemed to be a flick by Lewandowski after Alphonso Davies had delivered an exquisite cross into the Dortmund box to double the the visitors’ lead just four minutes after the restart.

Haaland withstood physical competition from two Bayern defenders and held his composure to slot the ball past Neuer, only to also be ruled offside.
Dortmund were rewarded for their efforts in the 64th minute when Marco Reus curled the ball from a tight angle past Neuer after receiving Bellingham’s pass.
Dortmund’s zeal to score coupled with Bayern’s determination to hold on resulted to tempers flaring, fouls being committed and yellow cards were handed out by the referee.
Dortmund centre back, Manuel Akanji played a poor pass which was poached by the ever sensitive Lewandowski, who slotted the ball past the Dortmund goalkeeper to effectively put the game to bed, thus taking the score to 3-1 in the 74th minute.
The win meant that Julian Nagelsmann had won his first career trophy with his first win as Bayern manager and he had relieved himself of some pressure following their six match winless run.
The German tactician had this to say;
“I think we defended very well, especially in the first half. We thoroughly deserved to win. It’s not easy against Dortmund with the attacking power that they have.
“The title is reward for last season because we won the title. Not me, but Hansi Flick. The title belongs more to others than it does to me.”
Bayern are deserved German Super Cup champions, now their focus will be directed back to the Bundesliga in a bid to retain the title.
