Jules Kounde is a player wanted this summer by Chelsea. The Sevilla defender is one of the most sought after defenders in Europe.

Chelsea had made an effort to sign the player in a cash plus player deal with Zouma going the other way. However, the Blues had their bid tossed by Sevilla who made it known that they will only accept cash for the transfer of the player.

Sevilla are requesting a fee of around €80m for the Frenchman and are unwilling to budge on their valuation of the player.

Negotiations have slowed down since then and things have taken a dramatic twist as Chelsea academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah has put out performances that could rival Kounde.

Chalobah made his first senior appearance in the Super Cup final against Villarreal. He was named Chelsea’s Man of the Match for his brilliant display at the Blue’s defence.

A few days later, Chalobah was given the nod ahead of Kurt Zouma in their first game of the season against Crystal Palace.

The 22-year-old made his Premier League debut appearance starting alongside Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger in a back three.

It was a dream debut for the youngster as not only was he immense in defence, he also scored a long-range goal to seal a 3-0 win over their London neighbours.

Featuring in two senior games, winning the Super Cup and scoring on his Premier League debut, the player has fit in very well also as well as if he’s been a regular starter for many seasons.

These spectacular performances have left the fans beating drums of support for the defender who is now making Chelsea cool down their interests in Kounde.

Chelsea’s coaching staff speak very highly of the defender who has been consistent and won a lot of trophies with the Chelsea youth team. Thomas Tuchel himself has openly expressed his admiration of the player.

However, if Chelsea push on with the signing of Kounde, Chalobah could return to the bench, which would stunt his development.

With the hefty price tag on Kounde, Chelsea are being told to consider Chalobah as an alternative.

The player has proven he can be trusted and has an excellent assessment by the coach and the coaching staff.

The dilemma begs the question; why spend €80m on a new signing when you have a young academy player doing a good job already?

It is yet to be seen if Chelsea will go-ahead to sign Kounde or trust that Chalobah is up to the task. Let us know what you think in the comments section.
