Community Shield: Leicester Defeat Man City At Wembley

Leicester City are winners of the Community Shield courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Man City at Wembley.

The Foxes needed a late penalty goal from Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho to seal only their second-ever Community Shield.

The Community Shield is a meeting between last season’s Premier League champions, Man City, and the FA Cup winners, Leicester City.

Both sides had their chances in both halves with the Foxes being the better side and creating more than their counterparts.

First-half chances from Jamie Vardy, Harvey Barnes, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez all went unconverted.

However, in the second half, Pep Guardiola’s side managed to claw their way back into the game and creating chances of their own but were let down by their finishing.

When it appeared that the tie would go on to penalties with both sides failing to break the deadlock, Iheanacho made himself a nuisance in the Man City penalty area drawing a foul from a reckless challenge from defender Nathan Ake.

Meanwhile, City’s most expensive ever signing Jack Grealish was given his debut for the club after his £100m move from Aston Villa.

The Englishman showed a bit of skill as he came in as a second-half substitute but couldn’t make any meaningful impact on the game.

City youngsters Samuel Edozie and Ben Knight were also given their competitive debuts for the side after impressing in pre-season.

Despite missing several key players, the defeat would no doubt be a wake-up call to Pep Guardiola’s men with the new season set to start.

Leicester will kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Wolves on Saturday while Man City will face Tottenham on Sunday.
