Akwa United were deserving champions of the 2020/2021 NPFL title with one game to spare.
It was the first time in the club’s history to win the Nigerian Professional Football League title despite winning several other domestic trophies.
The victory came after a 5-2 win against MFM, to maintain their unbeaten run of 18 games.
“The promise Keepers” as they are delightedly called by their home fans, were very consistent for the most part of the season.
Before their match against MFM on Sunday which took place in Uyo at the Nest of Champions, Akwa United sits comfortably at the top of the league with 68 points from 36 matches. This put them six points clear of their closest rivals, Nasarawa United and Enyimba FC.

Akwa United performed above expectations as they were expected to experience goal drought after the departure of their star striker and highest goal scorer Ndifreke Effiong. However, Ubong Friday and Charles Atsimene were able to fill in the void rising up to the occasion.
Akwa United’s spot in the Continental League has hence been booked. The remaining two spots will be a four-man horse race between Nasarawa United, Enyimba, Kano Pillars and Rivers United on the last match-day to decide who joins Akwa United in the continental league.
Nasarawa United sits second on the table with 62 points and a +16 goal difference. The goal difference gives them an advantage over Enyimba who have 62 points and a goal difference of +6.
Kano Pillars are however breathing down both their necks with 61 points while Rivers United are not far behind with 60 points.
Should any of Nasarawa United or Enyimba drop points on the last match-day, they will miss their spot in the Continental League.
Akwa United coach, Kennedy Boboye, who won his first NPFL trophy with Plateau United, guided Akwa United to their first-ever NPFL title. This goes a long way to prove his quality as a manager in a league like the NPFL.
Congratulations to Akwa United who have done really well in their trophy-winning season. However, Nigerian clubs always suffer early exits from the Continental Champions League.
Can Akwa United be able to go far in the Champions League and have an impressive campaign there as well? Only time will tell the strength and length of their consistency as they face different teams from top leagues in the continent.
It is a big challenge thrown to the manager as well. Can he be able to do it on the international stage?
Big questions and many challenges ahead but for now, Akwa United get to enjoy their first league title win.
