Aberdeen have decided to honour Sir Alex Ferguson by building a bronze statue of him. The club won three Scottish league titles under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1980s. He also guided the club to the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and Super Cup in 1983.
This is certainly a reminder to a lot of fans that Sir Alex was more than just a Manchester United Legend.
The bronze statue will be made by sculptor Andy Edwards and will be based on a photograph taken of Sir Alex at Easter Road in 1980 after their title win.
It will be located on the external concourse outside the Richard Donald Stand at Pittodrie.
“I am thrilled and honoured by this recognition from Aberdeen Football Club, where I spent a fantastic and memorable part of my managerial career,” said Sir Alex.
“I am particularly pleased with the image the club has chosen to base the statue on and with the choice of sculptor whose recent work is incredibly lifelike. I can’t wait to see it!”

Let’s take a look at the highlights of his managerial career at Aberdeen.
In June 1978, Ferguson joined Aberdeen as manager replacing Billy McNeill who went on to manage Celtic after only a year. Aberdeen was one of Scotland’s biggest names as far as club football was concerned, but they had only won the league once.
The season was a topsy-turvy one as Aberdeen reached the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup Final but unfortunately lost both matches and finished fourth in the league.
Aberdeen also lost the 1979/80 Scottish League Cup to Dundee United after a replay. Ferguson took the blame for the defeat, saying he should have made key changes to his team.
Aberdeen started the 1979/80 season poorly but went on to win the league on the final day after recording a 5-0 win. It was the first time in 15 years that Rangers or Celtic were not crowned Champions of Scotland at the end of the season. Aberdeen also won the Scottish Cup in 1982.
The following season, Ferguson guided Aberdeen to glory as they won the European Cup Winners Cup. They had qualified for the competition as a result of winning the Scottish Cup the previous season.
Aberdeen under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson swept aside Bayern Munich on their way to the finals and eventually defeated Real Madrid 2–1 to win the tournament and become just the third Scottish team to win a European trophy.
Ferguson eventually joined Manchester United in 1986 but not before winning three league titles, four Scottish Cups, one Scottish League cup, one Drybrough Cup, one European Cup Winners’ Cup and one European Super Cup.
With thid impressive list of honours, Sir Alex Ferguson is probably overqualified for a statue. He may well be out of management, but Aberdeen faithful will certainly not forget the name, Sir Alex Ferguson.
