Toby Alderweireld Leaves Tottenham For Qatari Club

Belgian defender, Toby Alderweireld will not be a member of Tottenham’s locker room ahead of the new Premier League season.

Alderweireld leaves Tottenham for Qatari side, Al-Duhail for a reported fee of around £13m.

The 32-year-old leaves North London after six years having joined Spurs in 2015 from Atletico Madrid on a five year contract. With the move, he was reunited with former Ajax teammates, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen.

Alderweireld made 236 appearances for the club in all competitions. He was a part of the Spurs squad which played the Champions League final against Liverpool in 2019.

Upon arrival, he was quickly recognised as one of the Premier League’s best defenders,  excelling in a defensive partnership with international teammate, Jan Vertonghen. He was chosen as a center back in the PFA team of the year.

Alderweireld scored his first ever goal for Tottenham in a 4-1 win over Manchester City. He quickly developed an appetite for scoring against London rivals, with his second and third goals coming against West Ham and Arsenal.

In a post on his Twitter account, Alderweireld said: “Six years, two homes, a Champions League final and so many memories.

“You made me feel a part of your club from the moment I walked out at White Hart Lane and roared us on, no matter what, into our new, special, stadium.

“Thank you first to the fans and then to my team-mates and every incredible member of the Spurs staff, backroom and beyond.

“This club will always be in mine and my family’s heart. Love Toby.”

His exit will create a large hole in Tottenham’s defence that the club’s hierarchy must find a way to fill in thus transfer window.
