Nuno Espirito Santo: Everything About The Tottenham Head Coach

Nuno Herlander Simões Espìrito Santo simply known as Nuno by many is the Tottenham head coach that used to be a footballer who played as a goalkeeper.

Nuno was recently appointed as Tottenham’s manager after leaving Wolves at the end of the season. The Portuguese tactician has had managerial stints at Rio Ave, Valencia, Porto, Wolverhampton Wanderers and now Tottenham.

Let’s consider some of the highlights of his managerial career.

Rio Ave

In May 2012, Nuno was appointed by Rio Ave after Carlos Brito was relieved of his duties. In his second season in charge, Rio Ave reached both the Taça de Portugal and Taça de Liga Finals. He also led them to Europa League qualification for the first time in their history.

Valencia

Nuno was hired on the 4th of July 2014 on a one-year contract before signing an extension till 2018. In his first season, he guided Valencia to a fourth-place finish, picking up four points from Real Madrid in the process.

Nuno was also named La Liga Manager of the month three times. He resigned in November 2015 after a poor start to La Liga and the Champions League.

Porto

On 1 June 2016, Nuno was signed as Porto manager on a two-year deal. However, in May, after a trophyless season and a second-place finish, he was relieved of his duties.

Wolves

On 31 May 2017, Nuno was named the new head coach at Wolves after signing a three-year deal. Wolves were still a Championship club then.

The Portuguese won the manager of the month in November after guiding Wolves to four wins from four games.

That same season, Nuno led Wolves back to the Premier League after a six-year absence as he won the Championship.

Nuno won the manager of the month award in his second month in the top flight after accruing ten points from four games hence going unbeaten in November.

It was the first time a Wolves coach had won the award and on 4 May 2019, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in sport by the University of Wolverhampton.

Wolves finished seventh in the 2018/19 league season. It was their highest league rank since the 1979/80 season when they finished sixth.

The club also qualified for a European spot for the first time since 1980/81 reaching the UEFA Europa League.

Nuno also won the Premier League Manager of the month award for the second time in July 2020 for an unbeaten run of five games that included four wins and four clean sheets.

The 2019/20 season also saw Wolves secure a consecutive 7th spot finish, with a record points total of 59 points. They also reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League, losing to eventual winners Sevilla. That was their best Europa league outing since 1971/72 when they were finalists.

Nuno won the Premier League Manager of the month award for the third time in the 2020/21 season in October when Wolves underwent a four-match unbeaten run.

He is also the longest-serving Wolves coach in the Premier League era. On 21 May 2021, Wolves announced that Nuno would be leaving by mutual consent at the end of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur

On 30 June 2021, Tottenham announced Nuno as their new head coach on a two-year contract.

A new page in Nuno’s career has been opened, and in barely a month, a new chapter will be written. We may not know what it will contain, but we know that Tottenham have an experienced coach in Nuno and Spurs fans can be expectant.
