Manchester United have confirmed an agreement with Real Madrid have been made for the signing of centre-back Raphael Varane.
Both clubs have reportedly agreed to a fee understood to be £41 million including add ons. The defender has reportedly agreed to personal terms signing a four-year contract but the deal is subject to a medical.
The 28-year-old will become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s second major signing of the summer transfer window after the arrival of Jadon Sancho earlier in the month.
A statement from the Premier League club read:
“Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner, Raphael Varane, subject to a medical and to player terms being finalised.”

Real Madrid also confirmed the deal, with a statement:
“Our club thanks the player for his professionalism and exemplary conduct throughout his ten seasons representing our colours, during which time he has won 18 titles: four Champions Leagues, four Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, three Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups.
“Real Madrid would like to express their gratitude to Varane and his family and wish him the best of luck in this new stage of his career.”
Varane’s contract at Real Madrid was set to expire next summer so it only made sense for the club to cash in on the defender rather than risk losing him for free when his contract runs out.
Real Madrid had already been forced to lose Sergio Ramos who left the club as a free agent after 16 years at the club.
The Spaniard’s contract expired this summer and he signed with PSG after allegedly refusing a contract extension proposed by the club.
Not wanting something similar to happen, Real Madrid have decided to let Varane go for a fair price. The defender reportedly had his heart set on the move having being in search of a new challenge in his career.
