Polish Striker, Robert Lewandowski has won the German Football Player of the year award for the 2020/2021 season.
What’s amazing is that the Bayern Munich striker also won the award for the 2019/2020 season, meaning he has won it on back to back occasions.
For devoted followers of the Bundesliga, this will come as no surprise given the class of the Bayern forward especially noting his exploits in the just concluded season.
The Polish striker was the recipient of 356 votes in a poll that consisted of 563 votes. For fans who don’t really follow German top flight football, let’s take a look at Lewandowski’s numbers in the 2020/21 season.
-Lewandowski scored 8 penalties. The most of any player.
-Robert’s expected goal ratio was 34.62, also the most of any player. He eventually scored 41 goals.
– He had 68 shots on target last season, the most of any player in the division.
-He scored 41 goals in the Bundesliga, the most of any player in the division.
– He had 88 big chances last season, once again, the most of any player.
-He recorded 7 assists in the Bundesliga.

Coupled with winning the Bundesliga yet again, Lewandowski also won the golden boot for the fourth time in five seasons and scored 41 goals in the Bundesliga, breaking Gerd Muller’s record of 40 goals in a single season.
He won the Best FIFA men’s Player award in December, 2020. Unfortunately, the 2020 Ballon D’Or edition was canceled due to covid 19 and the news was received with much criticism as Lewandowski was seen as the frontrunner for the award.
In January 2021, Lewandowski reached yet another milestone as he became the first player in Bundesliga history to score 21 goals after just 16 games, breaking Gerd Muller’s record of 20 goals during the 1968/69 season.
In March, he scored a goal in Bayern’s away win over Werder Bremen, becoming the joint-second on the all-time Bundesliga scoring list with 268 goals along with Klaus Fischer.
A week later, he surpassed Klaus Fischer, as he struck thrice in the first half to condemn Stuttgart to a 4-0 defeat. He also saw his massive goalscoring efforts commended by clinching his first European Golden Shoe award.
Lewandowski featured for Poland in the just concluded Euro 2020, managing three goals in the competition. His country however didn’t qualify beyond the group stages.
Despite that, it’s obvious to many that he deserved the award, and who knows, the Polish forward might just win the Balon’dor this year.
