Fernando Torres has returned to Atletico Madrid as the head coach of Atletico’s Under-19 team after stepping away from the reserve team for personal reasons.
The Spanish forward was certainly one of Atleti’s greats. He scored 129 goals in 404 appearances in all competitions and was key to Atletico’s return to the Spanish top flight in 2001 after they were relegated the previous season.
Torres swapped Madrid for Liverpool in 2007, but he returned in 2015 to the welcome of 45,000 fans who flocked to the stadium just to welcome him back.
The former Liverpool forward won a trophy in his final season with Atletico Madrid, coming off the bench in their 3-0 win over Marseille in the Europa League final.
He then bade his farewell, scoring twice against Eibar in his final game at the then newly constructed stadium, Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico Madrid were certainly pleased with his return and had this to say;
“Fernando Torres has come back home. The Atletico legend has come back to our club to take the reins of the under-19 team for the 2021/22 season.
“Torres, who last year worked with several of the club’s youth teams in order to get to know the workings of the club, will take another step in his coaching education on his way to becoming a first-team coach.”
In Torres, Atleti youths know they have someone who worked his way up to the top. For the Madrid giants, and Torres will certainly be more than just a coach, he’ll be a mentor.
