Ashley Cole Appointed England’s U-21 Assistant Coach

Former Chelsea defender, Ashley Cole has been appointed to serve as an assistant coach of the England U-21 team. Cole is expected to combine his current role at the Chelsea Academy alongside his new appointment.

The Chelsea legend has been busy coaching the Chelsea U-15 team at the Chelsea Academy in 2019. He also took part in the launch of England Football Learning’s International Player to Coach (IP2C) program that works for both former and current international players, which automatically launched Cole into the coaching and management sphere.

Ashely Cole is expected to work with new head coach, Lee Carsley who replaced Aidy Boothroyd. Lee was also the former coach of the England U-20 team before taking charge of the U-21 side.

The 40-year-old was phenomenal for Chelsea during his playing career. He made 385 appearances for Chelsea scoring 15 goals, providing 31 assists and kept 148 clean sheets.

Cole also won the Champions League, Premier League, Europa League, 4 FA-cups and a League Cup with the Blues.

‘I am really happy to get this opportunity to support Lee and work with the best youngsters in the country,’ Cole said following his appointment.

‘I loved playing for the national team and to now get the chance to work as an England coach is a special feeling. St. George’s Park is an amazing place and I can’t wait to get started.

‘I want to do my best to help young players to develop, and also learn from some brilliant people at the same time.’

Lee, on the other hand, has expressed his satisfaction with the appointment of Cole into the coaching team at St. George’s Park and also seeing him as a brilliant addition;

‘I have been on courses with Ashley during lockdown and been impressed,’ said the former Ireland international.

‘He is interested in coaching, in player development and a lot of our thoughts are aligned.’

England’s U-21 side were knocked out of this year’s European Championship in the group stages, Ashley Cole and Lee will be looking forward to revamp the team.
