Thomas Tuchel Wins German Manager Of The Year Award

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been named the Germany Manager of the Year for the 2020/2021 season.

The award for the German Football Manager of the year has been awarded since 2002. The recipient of the award is determined by German football journalists from the Association of German Sports Journalists and the publication Kicker.

German tactician and Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel was named the winner of the award, being the recipient of 129 votes. He saw off competition from the likes of former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick and Edin Terzic who is the manager of Borussia Dortmund, to clinch the award.

Last year’s winner of the award Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, only received three votes after a largely under-par season with the Reds.

Tuchel was appointed as Chelsea boss four months to the end of the 2021/22 campaign, taking over from Frank Lampard following a poor run of results.

The former PSG boss swiftly turned the Blues’ season around, guiding them to the finals of the FA cup which he lost to Leicester, securing a top-four finish and winning the Champions League title.

These achievements were certainly decisive to the voters in Tuchel’s selection as the German Football manager of the year.

Here’s what Chelsea boss, had to say about winning the award;

“I accept the award very gratefully as a great honour for the entire team because I see myself as a team player.

“Therefore, the personal award is a bit uncomfortable for me. Who wants to decide what is the greatest? Maybe Christian Streich or Bo Svensson deserved the award.

“Maybe you could drive him to Freiburg every year. Maybe you would have to drive him to Heidenheim because the work there is outstanding.”

“I don’t believe in individual awards too much, I truly believe it is a team effort, not only the players on the pitch everybody loves but the team behind the team. I don’t do this alone. I do it with my staff, not only my German and Hungarian staff but all the people at Cobham.

“It’s incredible to be part of because there we have an incredible amount of quality and support. Football teams can win without the coaches, but coaches cannot win without the team. It’s a reward for the team and what we did, and now let’s get on.’

Former Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes had this to say;

“I have held Thomas in high esteem for many years. He is passionate about football. Only with this dedication has he been able to be so successful.

“He fully deserves the election of coach of the year. There are ups and downs in the coaching profession. Lows, but in the end the pendulum always strikes the side of whoever deserves it.”

Tuchel will be looking to boost his coaching credentials and career trophies as he prepares the Blues for the Super Cup clash against Villarreal and later, the Club World Cup campaign.
