Is This The Year Tottenham End Their Trophy Drought?

Do you know that North London club, Tottenham Hotspur, are the first British club to win a UEFA club competition?

Tottenham were also the inaugural winners of the UEFA Cup in 1972, thus becoming the first British club to win two different major European trophies.

Domestically, Spurs have won two League titles, four League Cups, seven FA Community Shields and eight FA Cups. In Europe, they have won one European Cup Winner’s Cup and two UEFA cups.

Despite these incredible achievements, Tottenham have undergone a 13-year trophy drought, last winning a trophy in 2008 when they beat Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup final.

Their most recent finals however, have resulted in losses. Spurs lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the Champions League final at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid in 2019. They also most recently lost 1-0 to Manchester City last season in the League Cup final.

Tottenham have slowly changed in status from being European heavyweights to being unable to win even a domestic trophy. What has gone wrong and how can they fix things?

If Tottenham want to win a trophy, they would have to:

Spend adequately in the transfer window

Tottenham already possess world class players in the persons of England striker, Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura, Tanguy Ndombele, World Cup winner Hugo Lloris amongst others.

A few key additions to further strengthen their squad could move them from title hopefuls to title contenders to eventual title winners.

Change their playing style

Tottenham have often been accused of playing defensively when they should attack their opponents. The arrival of former Wolves boss, Nuno Espirito Santos should see Tottenham’s playing style change drastically.

Wolves played expansive football under the tutelage of Nuno, and a key trademark of their tactics was the utilization of their fullbacks to their maximum capacity.

The combination of the brains and passing ability of Portuguese duo Ruben Nerves and Joao Moutinho coupled with the speed and crossing ability of Adama Traore and the sharpness of Raul Jemenez were key elements of Wolves football.

Santos will possess a lethal striker in Harry Kane, excellent wingers in Son and Moura amongst others. Spurs fans can certainly expect a different tactical approach.

Focus on all competitions

Spurs players were accused by former coach, Jose Mourinho of being unmotivated especially at early stages of cup matches. This proved to be costly as Spurs surrendered a two-goal advantage to Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League to get knocked out in the quarter finals.

Cups are won by winning games from the first stages to the finals and if Spurs want to end their 13-year trophy drought, they must be at their very best from the early stages of competitions.
