Arjen Robben Refused Role At Club To Take A Break From Football

Former Netherlands International Arjen Robben has announced his retirement from football for the second time. 

Known for his dribbling skills, ball control and attacking threat, Arjen Robben has sparked euphoria across different clubs, cheering the fans and winning silverware. 

He has now decided to quit football finally after his first retirement which saw him return to play again at Groningen, a short spell that was plagued with injuries.

According to Groningen official statement on the club’s website, they had thought the 37-year-old would be with the club for at least another season only for him to announce his retirement.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Groningen technical director, Mark-Jan Fledderus said:

‘It was common knowledge that we really wanted Arjen to stick with it for another year, but we also said that we appreciate and respect every decision made by him.

‘We have offered him to remain active in a role within the club, in whatever position. Arjen has indicated that he first wants to spend a holiday with his family and to take a break from football.’

Earlier in the week, the Dutchman announced his plans to quit football. He told Groningen official YouTube channel:

‘My football heart still wants to continue. That is also the reason why I am sorry. But at some point you have to be realistic.

‘It is a battle between the emotional and the rational. And then you have to make a smart decision, which I hope I did. But I cannot say I am very happy to make this decision.’

Arjen Robben joined PSV in 2002, spending two seasons with them and winning one Eredivisie tittle in the processs. He then joined Chelsea in 2004 staying with the Blues for three years. 

Robben went on to win two Premier League titles, one League Cup and an FA Cup during the course of his stay. He was a part of the Chelsea squad that won back-to-back league titles in 2005 and 2006 under Jose Mourinho.

He also played for Madrid, winning one league title. He left Madrid shortly after Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka signed for the Spanish giants.

The 37-year-old later joined Bayern Munich where he fully established himself as one of best attackers with his dribbling skills, control and pace.

Robben terrorised Bundesliga defences and was pivotal as Bayern won eight titles in ten seasons. He also won a Champions League title with them.

The Dutchman also featured for the Netherlands scoring 37 times and representing them in six major tournaments.
