Callum Hudson-Odoi Switches Nationality

Chelsea forward, Callum Hudson-Odoi has decided to switched his allegiance from England to Ghana, according to reports.

The decision comes shortly after he paid a courtesy visit to the President of Ghana Akufo-Addo during his vacation in Ghana. The Chelsea star spent his holiday in Ghana after the Premier League season came to a close.

Hudson-Odoi was born and raised in Wandsworth, Greater London. He is the second son of former Hearts of Oak Ghanaian midfielder Bismark Odoi which makes him eligible to represent either one of both countries.

The 20-year-old Chelsea academy graduate has been a long term fan of the Ghana Football Association and has often pondered on a switch of nationality. This is despite appearing for England three times at the senior level.

Hudson-Odoi was not part of the England squad that played in the EURO 2020. The Three Lions went as far as reaching the final of the competition which they eventually lost to Italy via penaltieslost to Italy via penalties.

During his courtesy call to the Ghana President, he presented a customized t-shirt to Akufo-Addo. He was also captured watching the match between Accra Great Olympics and Hearts of Oak which ended in a 1-1 stalment.

It is believed that Hudson-Odoi is still eligible to feature for the Black Stars under the new FIFA eligibility rules that now allows players to switch if they have played no more than three competitive matches at senior level prior to them turning 21.

The Chelsea attacker was part of the UEFA Champions League squad for Chelsea managing three goals. This is despite not featuring in the later stages of the competition including the final against Manchester City which the Blues eventually won by a lone goal.

In all competition during the 2020/21 campaign for Chelsea, Hudson-Odoi made 32 appearances scoring four goals and providing three assists.

It is now expected that the youngster will no longer feature for England in the subsequent games which means that the Black Stars could have him at their disposal to further strengthen their attacking options.

Hudson-Odoi is the latest Premier League player to decide to switch after Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte earlier made a switch from France to Spain prior to the Euros.
