Five Chelsea Players Chase Record In Euro Final

As many as five Chelsea players have been working hard ahead of Sunday’s Euro 2020 final game at Wembley, the most by any club.

England lock horns with Italy in a much anticipated final at Wembley on Sunday evening with the Three Lions looking to secure a major international silverware for the first time since 1966.

Meanwhile, Italy have claimed three major silverware since then and would be looking to dash England’s hopes at Wembley.

Mason Mount, Reece James and Ben Chilwell are all part of Southgate’s team that trained at St George’s Park, the FA headquarters in Staffordshire before traveling down to London on Saturday afternoon.

Mason mount will be looking to keep his place in the team for tonight’s show at Wembley. The midfielder was part of the squad that defeated Denmark in the semi-finals earlier in the week.

For the Azzuri, both Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri will be hoping to start in the game against England. Roberto Mancini is expected to make little or no changes to the squad that ousted Spain in the semi final. Why fix what’s not broken right?

Jorginho has been a key player for Mancini’s side and an ever present in the tournament while Emerson has featured as a replacement for Leonardo Spinazzola as a result of the injury sustained by the Roma defender.

The Chelsea players are hoping to join an exclusive list of players who have won both the UCL and Euros in the same season.

Chelsea beat Manchester City 1-0 in Porto to clinch their second UEFA Champions League title. Mason Mount, Reece James and Jorginho all featured for Chelsea against City and could complete the double tonight.

Do you know that only nine players have ever won the UEFA Champions League and the Euros in the same year?

To qualify as ‘double winners’, players must have appeared in both winning finals. The players are listed below:

1964: Luis Suárez (Internazionale Milano & Spain)

1988: Hans van Breukelen, Ronald Koeman, Berry van Aerle, Gerald Vanenburg (PSV Eindhoven & Netherlands)

2012: Fernando Torres, Juan Mata (Chelsea & Spain)

2016: Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe (Real Madrid & Portugal)

France and Real Madrid’s Nicolas Anelka and Christian Karembeu (2000) are left out of the list despite technically winning both trophies because they didn’t appear in both finals. Same goes for Wim Kieft who won it with PSV and Netherlands.

In 2008 Germany’s Michael Ballack, then with Chelsea, became the first player to appear in European Cup and EURO final defeats in the same year; Antoine Griezmann also suffered the double disappointment in 2016 with Atlético de Madrid and France.
