PSG Could End Champions League Drought With Summer Additions

Ligue One giants PSG have been in the headlines for luring the big names in world football this summer transfer window.

Former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos is the latest to complete a move to the Parc des Princes on a two year transfer deal.

The French side had previously added Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi who was signed for a reported €70m deal from Inter Milan and Georgino Wijnaldum who was signed on a free transfer after his contract expired at Liverpool, to their already formidable squad.

The nine times Ligue One champions are currently enjoying their biggest transfer window since 2017, after luring Kylian Mbappé for a reported fee of €145m, and former Barcelona star Neymar Jr. in a move worth €222; making the Brazilian the most expensive player in football history.

Despite the French side assembling one of the most formidable sides in Europe in the last couple of years, Les Parisiens are yet to lift Europe’s prestigious silverware; the Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have dominated the French league from 2017-18 up until 2019-20 season, until their dominance was truncated by a successful title charge by rivals Lille.

But despite their domestic successes and completion of big transfer deals, in the eyes of many, Les Parisiens still have the UEFA Champions League title to win in order to be acknowledged as one of the big boys in Europe.

The French giants reached the UEFA Champions League finals in the 2019/20 season, under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel but fell short to the brilliance of Bayern Munich, losing 1-0.

PSG were also kicked out of the competition last season by eventual runners up Manchester City, losing both legs in the semi finals.

With the new season coming up, the side is once again looking forward to winning their first major European title and have started by bolstering their squad.

The French side have signed a four-time Champions League winner; a Premier League winner; a Serie A winner, and a Euro 2020 finalist.

The squad looks unplayable on paper, with veteran defender Sergio Ramos, Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi, Kimpembe and Marquinhos lining up in defence for the Parisians.

After securing a contract extention for Neymar Jr and their determination to keep France forward Kylian Mbappe in the squad, one has to be impressed with how formidable their potential starting line-up looks.

PSG are also rumoured to be pursuing a deal for AC Milan defender Theo Hernández and free agent Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has also been tipped to join Pochettino’s team in recent weeks. All three players could be added to the crop before the end of the transfer window.

Can they finally lift the European silverware for the French giants? The football world awaits to see how their season unfold.
