Former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo has emerged as the latest candidate to take over the vacant Spurs managerial position.
Since sacking Jose Mourinho in April, Tottenham have been in search of a suitable replacement to the Portuguese. While the former Chelsea manager has long moved on, securing a job as Italian side AS Roma’s head coach, Spurs are still in search of a manager.
New director of football Fabio Paratici is spearheading the club’s search but their search for a manager precedes his appointment. The London side have failed to land several of their coaching targets for months and Nuno is now the latest and most likely target on the list.
Former Tottenham Hotspur player Ryan Mason was given the responsibility of being in charge of the club on an interim basis when Mourinho left. While he took charge, Spurs scouted managers including Massimiliano Allegri, Erik ten Hag, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca, Mauricio Pochettino, Gennaro Gattuso and Julen Lopetegui all of which either turned down the offer of had talks break down.
While Allegri decided to return to Juventus, Erik ten Hag opted to renew his contract with Ajax rather than join Tottenham. Despite prolonged talks with Conte and Fonseca, both talks broke down. Spurs also tried to persuade former manager Pochettino to join but he also turned them down, opting to stay at PSG.
Sevilla President recently revealed that Lopetegui turned down a “dizzying” offer from Spurs in order to remain with the La Liga side. Meanwhile, fans went on a fierce twitter protest against the appointment of Gattuso who abruptly left Fiorentina three weeks after taking over and without having being in charge of even a single match.
Nuno stepped down from his position as the Wolves boss at the end of the season. The Portuguese was initially not considered for the role until very recently when other options failed. It is yet to see if Spurs will finally get the deal over the line.
