The Portuguese saw off competition from Man City team-mate Kevin De Bruyne and Tottenham striker Harry Kane, to claim the award.

Dias who is just 24 years old is the first defender to win the award since Liverpool’s Steve Nicol back in 1989. He is also only the third ever player to win the award in his debut season.

Colombia had earlier presented a formal request to CONMEBOL for the competition to be rescheduled due to the unrest, but it was rejected.

“CONMEBOL can ensure the playing of the 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America and will reveal in the coming days the relocation of the games that were due to be played in Colombia,” said the statement by the South American footballing body.

The incident happened after Ricardo Pereira was penalised for a foul on Ben Chilwell. The foul sparked an altercation between almost every player from both teams.
